Yorktown American Legion Post #1009                    Volume No. 1                  Issue No. 4                            April / May 2008

Our Post loses a leader, mentor and Past Commander

Sadly we report that our Past Post #1009 Commander Tom Reilly was called up to his final post on March
27, 2008.  A detachment of Post #1009 members gathered to bid farewell and render a final salute to Tom at
the Clarke Funeral home in Yorktown.  Commander Reilly served the Yorktown American Legion in many
areas, most notably as Post #1009’s Commander from 1996 through 2004.  Tom was a veteran of the US Air
Force and is survived by his wife, Caren, his daughter, Debra, and his son, Michael.
While Tom’s illness kept him from attending our recent functions, he was always up on what was going
on.  Tom’s good friends in the Post regularly visited him and relayed our best wishes to him, and his to us.
Yorktown Post #1009 was a big part of Tom’s life, as he was a big part of ours.  We will miss his friendly spirit
    at every event we have.

                                                                    Mother’s Day Brunch

On Sunday, April 27, 2008 the Post will be having our Mother’s Day Brunch.  In order to properly plan this
event we need everyone’s RSVP in advance.  This year the cost of the Brunch is only $5.00 per person if your
reservation and payment is made by our April 10th General Meeting.  After that date the price will increase to
$10.00 per person.  We have instituted this new payment policy because many people wait until the last
moment to decide to attend and we are unable to get an accurate head-count to purchase food.  This leaves
us with either too much food, which goes to waste, or an amount of food barely sufficient for the event.
This has resulted in our new policy.
Treat the lady in your life to a relaxing meal before Mother’s Day – you both deserve it!  We hope to see you
    there.

Our newest order of Post #1009 baseball caps has arrived and is available for purchase for the low price
of $13.75 each.  The caps are blue with the Post’s information stitched on the front panel in gold.  The caps
are fully adjustable in size and are the only ones that we found that are MADE IN THE USA!  That means
something to us, as we hope it does to you.  Pick up a cap for summer, or get one to wear in the Memorial
    Day or Veterans Day Parades.
We are also checking out the pricing and feasibility in having Post #1009 golf shirts made up for when we
have events in weather too warm for wearing our Post jackets.  Let us know if you would be interested in
    ordering one.

Do You Remember Memorial Day Poppies?

Most everyone remembers those years gone by when Veterans and Legionnaires handed out red poppies
to remember those veterans who never came home from America’s conflicts.  On Saturday, May 24, 2008 from
9 AM to 3 PM Post #1009 will ‘dust-off’ this tradition and hand out red poppies at 2 locations in Yorktown.  We
will be at the A&P Supermarket at the Triangle Mall in Yorktown, and at the A&P Supermarket in Shrub Oak.  It
is hoped that we will be able to educate those members of our younger generation as well as remind members
of our older generation of the significance of these red poppies and why they should be worn with pride.  We
will also be collecting donations to support our local American Legion programs.  We ask that all Post members
step forward for a couple of hours to raise funds for our programs and help to remind the public that Memorial
Day wasn’t established to hold barbecues, but to honor our fallen veterans.  Contact Patrick McDonough 914-
953-6807 if you can help us for a few hours that day.

March With Us on Memorial Day in Yorktown

We want to remind everyone that the Yorktown Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for Monday, May 26,
2008 at 11:00 AM.  We extend our invitation to ALL VETERANS to join us in marching from Yorktown Town Hall
to the Devito Memorial Gazebo to honor all members of the US Military who have suffered the ultimate
    sacrifice for their country.
Yorktown’s Fire Department, Ambulance Corps, Girls Scouts, and Boy Scouts all have large groups
marching in the Parade.  We need every Veteran to give up 90 minutes to participate in this parade.  That is
all it takes to take part in the ceremony at Town Hall and march in the parade.  We must let our community
see that their neighbors and acquaintances are Veterans.  Everyone is keenly aware that our US military is
stationed in harms way all over the world, but most don’t realize how many Veterans there are walking among
them.  March with us and let everyone see our numbers.
