U.S. Flag Retirement

The United States flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.(U.S. Flag Code)

Our Yorktown Post accepts all worn, torn, or damaged US flags 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in our ‘Flag Drop Box’ in front of our Post Hall.  Each June our Post conducts a US Flag Retirement Ceremony in honor of Flag Day.  At this ceremony our Post joins with local Scouts and the Yorktown Fire Department as we retire by fire these unserviceable flags.  We retire at each ceremony from 600 to 1,200 US flags which were collected during the past year.

This ceremony is open to the public and all are welcome to assist in the retirement of these worn and torn US flags.
