On July 30, 2019, Congress and the President of the United States changed the Charter of The American Legion and the military service dates for membership in The American Legion. The new qualifying dates of military service have been changed to include:
- World War I – April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918
- World War II – December 7, 1941 until Congress recognizes the end of the WAR ON TERROR at a future date.
***Previously recognized conflicts which were recognized by Congress as qualifying veterans for membership in The American Legion:
- World War I – April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918
- World War II – December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946
- Korean War – June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955
- Vietnam War – February 28, 1961 – May 7, 1975
- Lebanon/Grenada – August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984
- Panama – December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990
- Gulf War/ War on Terrorism – August 2, 1990 to the present.
Membership dues for Yorktown Post #1009 are only $52 per year.
