Rendering Honors

Our Yorktown American Legion Post #1009 will render honors to any deceased Veteran when requested by the family or funeral home.

Our Post maintains close relationship with Yorktown’s two funeral homes and their staff. When these funeral homes learn they will be serving a deceased US Veteran they notify the families that our American Legion Post can perform a final rendering of honors if they wish for their loved one. Once our Post is notified that this ceremony has been requested our members are notified via email. The ceremony is only a few minutes long but the families appreciate the 6 to 16 uniformed Legion members filing in, reciting their prayer, turning a rendering a final salute to their fellow veteran in thanks for their honorable service. This does not interfere with the deceased veteran’s gravesite service where members of their branch of military service fold and present the US flag to the family and play ‘Taps’.

Our Yorktown Post is one of the few Post’s still offering this final salute and does so for 25 -30 veterans each year. Our Post members want to perform this service for their fellow veterans – so pass the word to your fellow veterans and their families, so when the time comes… we can be there for you.
